Positionality & Educational Values
Art is a fundamental tool for critical inquiry and cultural dialogue. My educational approach integrates technical mastery with conceptual rigor, fostering an environment where students can explore the intersections of traditional media and contemporary theory. I'm committed to cultivating a pedagogy that values intellectual curiosity and aesthetic integrity.
Â
My name is Amara Niarhakos, and I am currently pursuing a BFA in Art Education. I identify as a white, Greek, Syrian, and Lebanese non-binary queer artist. My background and lived experiences shape how I approach teaching, learning, and community within the classroom. I have always been drawn to curiosity, experimentation, and visual expression, which has guided both my artistic practice and my interest in education. Growing up in environments that allowed for personal exploration and autonomy influenced my belief that students benefit from having space to question, create, and form their own understandings of the world.

My educational experiences span both public and charter school systems, exposing me to a range of teaching methods, learning environments, and student communities. These experiences have informed my understanding of how different approaches impact student engagement and success. I value adaptability, effort, and continuous growth, and I carry these principles into my teaching by encouraging students to take risks, reflect on their progress, and develop confidence in their abilities. My background in visual arts has reinforced the importance of process-based learning, where experimentation and personal connection are central to meaningful educational experiences.
Â
As an artist and educator, I view art as a space for exploration, identity development, and critical reflection. My experiences navigating identity and belonging have shaped my commitment to fostering inclusive, supportive classroom environments where all students feel seen and valued. I prioritize creating spaces that encourage collaboration, dialogue, and mutual respect, recognizing that students bring diverse perspectives and knowledge into the classroom. Through this approach, I aim to support students not only in developing technical and creative skills, but also in building confidence, self-awareness, and a sense of connection to their peers and their work.
Â
My teaching practice is grounded in the belief that art education extends beyond technical skill-building. It is a tool for communication, inquiry, and engagement with the world. I strive to design learning experiences that are relevant, reflective, and accessible, allowing students to connect their personal experiences to broader social and cultural contexts. By emphasizing choice, exploration, and critical thinking, I aim to support students in becoming thoughtful creators and active participants in their communities.
